Job Summary
At the University of Utahs Digital Matters (DM), we are building an interdisciplinary research agenda, drawing on disciplines from History to Computer Science to Fine Arts, so that different parts of campus can think and work together to create new tools and ideas. Located in the Marriott Library, Digital Matters is a mixed-use space for collaboration, digital art installations, workshops, events, and experimentation. Digital Matters is also interested in developing research questions informed by diverse scholarship and lived experiences. For example, although technical expertise is not required for this internship, students who have a background in computer programming and/or an interest in digital culture and the arts are encouraged to apply.
Digital Matters is accepting applications for three paid undergraduate internships for fall 2025 with an opportunity to extend into one additional semester. The intern is required to commit a minimum of ten hours and a maximum of fifteen hours a week. Start/end dates are negotiable.
Students will be in residence at Digital Matters and can use the space to meet, work, or brainstorm. Although some of the work can be done remote or digitally, Digital Matters will be the on-campus home. Interns are expected to be a part of the Digital Matters intellectual community and will attend weekly meetings, monthly reading groups, and events as an internship requirement.
For the Library to be able to appropriately monitor hours worked, part-time employees are generally asked to restrict their work with the University of Utah to Library employment only, unless an exception exists.
Responsibilities
Support current Digital Matters research projects and operations (i.e., assist in building humanities/arts data collections, data cleaning or collection, 3D printing, GIS mapping, text mining, or web scraping)
Attend weekly Digital Matters meetings
Attend monthly Digital Matters reading group
Attend Digital Matters events (i.e., research talks, art installations, film screenings)
Assist the Digital Matters program assistant with promoting Digital Matters through social media
If appropriate and desired, share your research at the end of the semester through a formal talk or apply to present at the Digital Humanities Utah Symposium in Spring 2026.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be a current University of Utah student enrolled 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.
Preferences
Self-motivated and willing to learn
Familiarity with major software programs and applications; programming skills are desirable but not necessary
Strong communication skills (oral and written)
