Under the supervision of the Athletic Director, the Band Director has administrative responsibilities and instructional oversite for the band program including the management of the recruitment, retention, and success of the program. This includes, but not limited to: conducting ensembles/bands, teaching instrumental music courses as deemed necessary by the office of Academic Affairs, direct, and develop the instrumental music program including performance ensembles. The Band Director will also actively recruit students and provide a positive and encouraging environment for collegiate level learning.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Student Recruitment including, but not limited to, awarding music scholarships, participating in DC3 recruiting events both on campus and off, actively recruiting music/band students from both in state and out of state high schools, utilizing social media and other communications to recruit and retain music/band students.
  • Manage and direct all instrumental performance groups during athletic events, special college events, and community events, both on and off campus.
  • Manage and direct all instrumental ensembles including, but not limited to, DC3 Marching Band, DC3 Pep Band, Wind Ensemble, Dodge City Symphony, Jazz Band, etc.
  • Schedule, plan, and organize performances both on and off campus including the preparation of performance materials for Public Relations for each concert and/or performance.
  • Instruct 1-6 credit hours of courses per terms as determined by the office of Academic Affairs and per Higher Learning Commission qualifications guidelines. These courses could include, but are not limited to, Music Theory, Aural Skills and Sight Reading, Understanding Music, applied instrumental music lessons, etc.
  • Develop music/band course syllabi and coordinate both curriculum in addition to scheduling of music instruction with the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Adjunct Instructors.
  • Work cooperatively with department and division faculty, division coordinators, and supervisors in the promotion and delivery of high quality collegiate education.
  • Aid in recruiting and obtaining qualified adjuncts that the Band Director will collaborate with to plan, implement, evaluate, and revise music/band curriculum.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Establish and implement a yearly budget in consultation with the Athletic Director
  • Coordinate Band Fundraising events through approval of the Athletic Director including the responsibility to seek funding through relevant grants, promote the band through involvement in the community, and assist in soliciting items for the Foundation auction.
  • Order and maintain inventories of appropriate equipment, instruments, music and uniforms, as needed.
  • Attend all department meetings as requested and serve on other College committees as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Music or Music Education required.
  • Teaching experience at the secondary and/or post-secondary levels.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven ability to conduct and teach instrumental music classes and ensembles.
  • Ability to manage, direct, and develop an instrumental program.
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting.
  • Ability to maintain teaching schedules, organize time, and execute duties in the delivery and support of high quality instruction.
  • Proven ability to work with diverse populations including traditional and non-traditional students.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Physical Requirements: With or without assistance

  • Ability to bend, stoop, jump, kneel stand, walk and be on your feet for extended periods of time.
  • Operate a motor vehicle and be able to drive to and from events/performances.
  • Ability to carry equipment needed to and from band practices and performances.
  • Ability to ambulate and navigate stairs and ramps throughout the campus complex.
