What You Will Be Doing

Responsible for providing litigation assistance to attorneys representing clients in criminal, civil, child in need of aid, and commitment cases. Tasks include organizing and managing cases, drafting letters and pleadings, providing direct client assistance, and utilizing the internal case management system.

The Public Defender Agency is appointed by the Court to represent people who cannot afford counsel. Paralegals are an integral part of that representation, working closely with attorneys and staff to acquire complete records, provide advanced administrative and legal and communicate with clients in writing and over the phone.

Many paralegals transition to investigative, administrative management, or private sector roles. The first 12 months are probationary and include formal and on?the?job training.

The Working Environment You Can Expect

Office located in Kenai, Alaska. Hours Monday through Friday, 8:00?AM 4:30?PM with an hour lunch at noon. Interacts with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, and assistants in the Kenai office and regularly communicates with co?workers across the state, Agency clients, and court staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Competency Based Minimum Qualifications

  • PI01B1 Paralegal?1 Any combination of education and/or experience that provides competencies in:

    • Attention to Detail thorough and conscientious.
    • Interpersonal Skills friendly, courteous, empathetic, culturesensitive, and able to handle difficult personalities.
    • Reading understand and apply written material.
    • Written Communication clear, concise, organized, and convincing.

  • Equivalent to post?secondary or vocational education in a legal area or experience preparing/reviewing legal documents such as affidavits, court reports, demand letters, discovery requests, transcripts, memoranda, letters of agreement, motions, subpoenas, and writs.
  • PI01B2 Paralegal?2 Successful completion of a formal Paralegal 1?2 training plan or any combination of education/experience that provides competencies in:
    • Adaptability adjust work plans and apply critical thinking.
    • Administrative Law knowledge of state and federal laws and procedures.
    • Attention to Detail thoroughness.
    • Interpersonal Skills empathy, courtesy, and culturally sensitive communication.
    • Stress Tolerance calm handling of high?stress situations.

  • Equivalent to post?secondary or vocational education in a legal, paralegal, criminal justice, or similar area, or experience performing paraprofessional legal investigation and support.

Special Note (All Levels)

Positions may require obtaining a Notary Public upon hire and passing a criminal background check. Overtime, weekend, or holiday work may be required. Additional detailed instructions are provided in the vacancy announcement.

Education

Post?secondary education is required to meet minimum qualifications. Transcripts must verify credentials and may be submitted with the application or within 48?hours of recruitment close.

Foreign Education

Foreign college credentials may be used if deemed equivalent by a private organization or an accredited U.S. university. Evidence must be provided.

Work Experience
