SUMMARY: Repairs and maintains equipment and related work as required by performing the following duties along with general shop cleaning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties will be assigned.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

Washes and cleans equipment.

Changes oil filters and oil.

Changes tires using service lift truck.

Checks and arranges supplies in the storeroom, notifies shop supervisor or clerk when supplies need to be reordered.

Services, tests and installs batteries.

Knowledge of testing and replacing alternators.

Knowledge of hydraulic systems

Make and change hydraulic hoses

Keeps work area clean and organized.

Fills out service or work records as required by shop supervisor.

Assists other mechanics with equipment repair as assigned by shop supervisor.

Installs exhaust mufflers, spark plugs and accessories.

Examines protective guards, loose bolts, and safety gear on equipment and adjusts as needed.

Must be available for call outs

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in the automotive field.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to effectively present information to other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals and using the metric system. Ability to use and read a tape measure.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

Employee is responsible for making purchases in accordance with Montgomery County’s Procurement Policy, with prior approval from the Mechanic Supervisor.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Minimum Class C driver’s license and be able to obtain a minimum of a Class B CDL license or preferably a Class A CDL license with a tanker endorsement (which is required to move to a Mechanic II) within 12 months. Must be willing to attend training classes as required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and equipment of the automotive mechanic's trade. Knowledge of the principles of the internal combustion engine.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITY: In order to advance from the position of Mechanic I to Mechanic II, certain conditions must be met.
