Job Description

Who We Are

Murmuration is a nonprofit organization that amplifies the power of civic engagement by providing data, digital tools, and research-driven insights to community-focused organizations so that together we can create an America where everyone can lead healthy, free, and dignified lives.

Every day, people are trying to shape our future for the better. Fighting for water that’s safe to drink. Schools that serve students equitably. Gun laws that make sense. And rallying people who care like we do. And yet too often the skillful organizers working to mobilize communities lack access to technology that could supercharge their efforts. Knocking on every door instead of knowing which will open most easily. And going up against outside interests that have half the heart, but twice the tools.

In communities across America, Murmuration’s partners are leveraging our data, tools, and insights to help thousands of organizers orchestrate millions of individual people to do big things together. Demand big things together. To create the world they want. Together.

About the Position

As the Director of Product Management leading product management efforts for Organizer, Murmuration's SaaS platform for community organizing and outreach, you'll work with a talented team to develop the tools that help our partners drive impact in their communities.

You'll manage, mentor, and coach a team of product managers to ship delightful and powerful experiences. You'll develop systems and processes to ensure we're making the right decisions for the right reasons, grounded in a clear understanding of our users' needs and behavior. Ultimately, you'll have helped build the most effective and intuitive platform for advocacy and political organizing.

You'll join a team that also includes Product Design, User Research, and User Education, working with a stellar team of engineers to develop a family of products across web and mobile – all focused on helping our Partners increase civic engagement and create a more equitable future with greater opportunity for everyone.

Job Level: M5

What You’ll Do

  • Effectively and empathetically lead a team of product managers, maintaining a culture that balances high standards and clear feedback with trust and empathy;

  • Make difficult prioritization judgment calls, leveraging 80-20 thinking to help the team stay laser-focused on the most critical initiatives and maintaining oversight of backlogs across the development team;

  • Integrate product strategy and organizational objectives into a high-level roadmap, quarterly development goals, and key metrics;

  • Partner with engineering leadership on decisions related to staffing, architecture, and platform-wide questions of SLO, standards, and thresholds;

  • Partner with design leadership to streamline and evolve product operations, implementing tools, processes, and workflows that empower the Product Management Team to work efficiently while fostering creativity and collaboration;

  • Up-level the team on product management craft, including integrating user research, user analytics, and market research to inform prioritization decisions, validate assumptions, and keep user value at the center of our decision-making process;

  • Design and lead a communication and collaboration framework with cross-functional stakeholders, ensuring that product managers get the information they need to make strong decisions and that teams across the organization have the information they need about the roadmap;

  • Drive alignment in the face of tension or differing perspectives – in part, by earning the respect and trust necessary to inspire commitment when consensus is lacking; and

  • Mentor and empower team members to help them reach their career goals, identifying opportunities to tailor responsibilities, assignments, and training to the areas where each individual is most interested in learning and growing.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a product leadership role;
  • 2+ years of experience as a manager, including coaching, making hiring decisions, and managing reports with a range of skillsets and seniority;
  • Experience developing and implementing product strategy, objectives, and metrics;
  • Experience developing and nurturing team culture, balancing high expectations with high psychological safety;
  • Strong product management craft with demonstrated experience working directly with users to deeply understand their problems and translate them into product requirements. You’ve learned to ask the right questions of the right people at the right time in the development cycle;
  • Technical competence sufficient to support positive-sum engagement with engineering leadership on staffing and architectural decisions;
  • Experience implementing a range of approaches to managing product development work, including different software development and planning processes;
  • A bias for action and an entrepreneurial, proactive mindset: the ability to thrive working in fast-paced environments (e.g., startup or similar); and
  • Strong judgment and analytical skills, including the ability to understand business requirements, integrate qualitative and quantitative metrics, and reconcile short-term needs with long-term strategic goals.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience working with campaigns, advocacy organizations/nonprofits and/or existing products in the political or issue advocacy ecosystem;
  • Previous startup experience;
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams developing technical/backend/data architecture, like APIs or ETL pipelines;
  • Hands-on experience with user-centered design (i.e., wireframing, storyboarding, and user flow development);
  • Experience in profile-based systems (like CRMs), especially related to audience segmentation and analysis; and/or
  • Data-competence: conceptual familiarity with data architecture and the ability to get hands-on with databases and data analysis (e.g., SQL/NoSQL).

Talented Product leaders come from all walks of life and career. If you are passionate about civic engagement and technology, please apply, even if you do not check every box!
