Reports To: Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Job Summary

The Director of Media Production is a pivotal, creative, and operational leadership role responsible for the planning, execution, and oversight of all media production for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO). This position leads the artistic and technical direction of a wide range of content, including audio recordings, concert films, educational videos, and live broadcasts.

This role is crucial in creating a revenue-generating media platform that supports the SLSO’s artistic vision, while also elevating its standing within the global entertainment and film industries. The Director of Media Production will lead the creation of a comprehensive media plan, including the relaunch and management of the SLSO's Arch label for commercial recordings, production of educational content, and the capture of performances for digital distribution. This position is essential for expanding the orchestra’s reach and deepening audience engagement through compelling and high-quality digital content and experiences.

The Director of Media Production works collaboratively with the Marketing and Communications department to ensure all content is presented effectively across digital channels (e.g., website, social media, email, YouTube) and aligned with brand and public relations strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

Media Production and Project Management

  • Lead the strategic planning, execution, monitoring, and successful completion of all SLSO media production projects, ensuring direct alignment with artistic and strategic goals.
  • Develop comprehensive project plans, including scope, timelines, resource allocation, and budgets for key revenue-driving initiatives such as commercial recordings, educational video series, and live concert broadcasts.
  • Oversee the entire lifecycle of content projects from ideation through pre-production, production, post-production, distribution, and archiving, with a constant focus on maximizing artistic quality and audience engagement.
  • Spearhead projects related to the Electronic Media Strategy, including the strategic relaunch and monetization of the SLSO’s media label, elevation of video production quality, and implementation of a robust digital asset management system.
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of diverse, high-value content designed to drive engagement and revenue, including streamed concerts, exclusive behind-the-scenes features, and educational documentaries.
  • Ensure consistently high-quality production values for live concert recordings, live broadcasts, and on-demand content to captivate and retain audiences.

Coordination and Collaboration

  • Proactively coordinate with internal teams, including artistic, operations, education, and production staff, to align project timelines, secure resources, and manage logistics for all media projects.
  • Liaise strategically with external vendors, including directors, cinematographers, editors, and distribution partners, ensuring exceptional quality and adherence to project scope.
  • Collaborate with conductors, musicians, composers, and guest artists on multimedia content creation that resonates with diverse audiences.
  • Partner closely with the Marketing and Communications team, especially Digital Engagement and Public Relations, to ensure media content powerfully supports promotional strategies and enhances the SLSO brand's reach and impact.

Strategic Input and Reporting

  • Actively contribute to the ongoing development and refinement of the SLSO’s Electronic Media Strategy, with an eye towards innovation and growth.
  • Manage rights, licensing, and advise on content distribution strategies across SLSO’s digital platforms.
  • Track and report on project progress, budget, IMA requirements, and outcomes to leadership, highlighting successes in revenue generation and audience expansion.
  • Stay informed about emerging digital trends, technologies, and platforms to proactively identify and capitalize on new opportunities for revenue and engagement.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Media Production, Film, Communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in media production and project management, with a proven track record of driving revenue and expanding reach, preferably in the arts, media, or entertainment sector.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing complex media projects from initiation to completion, on time and within budget.
  • Strong understanding of video and audio production processes, including live event filming, concert recording, and post-production.
  • Experience with digital content strategy, content management systems, digital asset management (DAM) systems, and various distribution platforms (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, streaming services).
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong leadership qualities with experience coordinating cross-functional teams and external vendors.
  • Familiarity with rights management, licensing, and accessibility standards for digital content.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A passion for classical music and the performing arts is highly desirable.
