ERG is seeking a Cultural Resources and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Specialist (Architectural History/Historic Architecture/Historic Preservation) to join our multidisciplinary team of planners and compliance specialists within our Environmental Planning and Impact Assessment service area. This team provides a wide range of planning services to Federal and State clients that require expertise in cultural resources management, and in particular, with ensuring compliance with the NHPA. This position is full-time and can be performed remotely or in a hybrid work environment at either of ERG\'s Fairfax, VA or Arlington, VA offices. Candidates local to the greater Washington, D.C., area will be preferred since the position requires occasional visits to client sites in the region. Responsibilities Lead team members in understanding and implementing compliance with cultural resource-related statutes, regulations, and executive orders, including but not limited to the NHPA. Lead outreach to and NHPA Section 106 consultations with local, state, and federal stakeholders, Native American Tribes, and Native Hawaiian Organizations. Perform desktop-based research, including historical research and records searches for archaeological and architectural resources within defined areas, and making effects determinations for proposed undertakings. Conduct occasional site visits, including condition assessments for historic structures and evaluation of properties for eligibility on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Support or work within multidisciplinary teams in preparing the cultural resource sections of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents, including Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements. Foster positive working relationships within ERG and with State/Tribal Historic Preservation Officers and clients. Lead various research tasks, technical writing, report development, historical documentation, and other cultural resource-related tasks. Assist with various aspects of projects such as tracking budgets and schedules, monitoring scopes, facilitating meetings, coordinating deliverables, and communicating with clients. Assist with developing and implementing cultural resource management programs for federal agencies. Qualifications and Skills Bachelor\'s degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Urban Planning, or a related field. While candidates with a background and experience in archaeology will be considered, ideal candidates will have background and experience with aboveground resources (i.e., buildings and structures). 3 to 8 years of relevant experience, specifically including experience in cultural resource management. Must meet Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards. Must currently hold or be able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret-level security clearance. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to clearly organize and synthesize project findings and recommendations for a diverse group of stakeholders. Strong understanding of NHPA Section 106 processes, including experience performing determinations of NRHP eligibility. Strong time management skills. Ability to manage and prioritize numerous concurrent projects and meet tight deadlines. Excellent attention to detail and critical thinking. Ability to develop high-quality, client-ready deliverables. Ideal candidates will have experience identifying and implementing mitigation and recordation measures to avoid or resolve adverse effects. Ideal candidates will have some project management experience including developing project schedules, budgets, and meeting client goals. Ideal candidates will have experience with Federal, state, Tribal, and/or local consultation and coordination for infrastructure and/or land management projects. Ideal candidates will have background and technical understanding in conducting or supporting NEPA reviews. Ideal candidates will have, or be able to obtain, professional registration/certification/license in historic preservation, architecture, planning, archaeology, or relevant field. Ideal candidates will have experience with GIS. Educational transcripts may be requested.
